For the last half century futurists have been drawing exponential curves and suggesting that by the mid-2020s the relentless growth of computing power would give rise to intelligent machines. They imagined that once computer systems started to get close to the power and complexity of a human brain things would change, but these notions seemed overly fantastical in a world where there was plenty of work to be done building the web, the cloud, mobile services, social media, and apps that could reliably complete basic commands! But this was no science fiction… the last 18 months has seen technology turned on its head. A new type of AI has evolved at astonishing speed, and we are undoubtedly now riding the exponential curve into a brave new world.
